History buffs, you’re in for a treat!
The Kelly Tree at Stringybark Creek is an absolute must-see. This spot, on a well-graded dirt road, is where Ned Kelly and his gang had their infamous shootout with police back in 1878. The memorial and signs really bring the story to life. And from there, it’s just a short hop to Power’s Lookout, once the hideout of Kelly’s mentor, Harry Power. Beyond the cool history, the views over the King Valley are simply stunning.
Along the way get held up at the Tolmie Tavern an iconic local landmark, the building originally served as a Cobb & Co stagecoach route and a gold rush destination. The Tavern serves Dinner Friday and Saturday, and Lunch Saturday and Sunday
Feeling adventurous?
Pop over the hill to Whitfield and the King Valley. It’s the perfect spot for a longer day out, indulging in some exquisite wine tasting and fantastic feasts at the cellar doors that pepper the valley.
And if your visit happens to be in February, whatever you do, don’t miss the Tolmie Sports Day! This incredible community-run event has been going strong for over 138 years. It’s a true testament to the heart and soul of Tolmie, packed with wood-chopping, barrel races, kids’ races, and and evening music. It’s like stepping back into a charming, bygone era!
